You can send simple text based campaigns or create templates to send appealing looking campaigns.
The benefit of text based campaigns is that your customers will be able to see everything you send without changing settings on their email programme. Also, many larger businesses only allow text based emails through anyway.
If you are selling visually appealing consumer goods, then a text email is not really going to do it! You need to create a visually appealing campaign with strong calls to action in the message.
There are various software options available so you can set this up and run this yourself. Be warned that if you want good looking campaigns you will need some design and development expertise.
